Ukrainian Grade 1–2 books explain adding 3, 4, 5 by parts: to add 3, add 2 and then 1 more (6 + 3 = 6 + 2 + 1). Subtracting works the same way: 9 − 3 = 9 − 2 − 1. The arcs on the number line show every step.
The parts of an equality have names: in 4 + 3 = 7 the numbers 4 and 3 are addends and 7 is the sum. In 9 − 4 = 5, 9 is the minuend, 4 is the subtrahend and 5 is the difference.
«Increase by 4» means add 4 and «decrease by 4» means subtract 4. To find 13 − 8 you can ask: 8 and how many make 13? That is subtraction through addition.
