Centners, tonnes and centuries
Change tonnes and centners into kilograms and find which century a year belongs to.
- Russia: grade 4
Guide
In Russian schools (Grade 4, "Quantities") children meet the bigger units of mass: the centner and the tonne (1 centner = 100 kg, 1 t = 10 centners = 1000 kg), and the units of time day, week, month, year, century (1 century = 100 years).
To change to a smaller unit multiply; to a bigger unit divide. A compound amount such as 3 t 5 centners is first changed into one unit and then added.
Centuries are counted like ordinal numbers: the years 1801 to 1900 are the 19th century. The number of the century is one more than the number of hundreds in the year. Ask the child to find the century in which a grandparent was born.
