Clocks and calendars

Turn the hands of a clock, write an afternoon time in 24-hour time, and find days on a calendar.

Guide

A clock has two hands. The short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. When the long hand points to 12, it is an o'clock time, such as 3 o'clock.

When the long hand goes all the way round, 60 minutes pass and the short hand moves on from one number to the next. That is why, at half past 7, the short hand is halfway between 7 and 8.

A day has 24 hours, so the short hand goes round twice a day. Phones and digital clocks often use 24-hour time: after 12 noon they carry on counting 13, 14, 15 … instead of starting again at 1.

On a calendar, each row is a week of 7 days, starting on Monday. Months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.

Drag the hands with your finger, and tap a day on the calendar. With a keyboard, the arrow keys turn a hand or move between days.
