Division with remainders and long division

Write a division digit by digit, see what a remainder is and what to do with it in a problem, and check a division by multiplying.

Guide

Sometimes things share out equally with nothing left over. Sometimes a few are left over: that is the remainder. Put 17 flowers equally into 4 vases and each vase gets 4 flowers, with 1 flower left over. We write 17 ÷ 4 = 4 r 1.

In the written method (the bus stop), the divisor sits outside the bracket on the left and the dividend goes inside. You write the quotient on top, above the digits, and the subtractions underneath.

Each step has three jobs: find how many times the divisor goes into the number and write that digit on top; multiply that digit by the divisor and write the answer underneath; then subtract. If there is another digit, bring it down and do the same again.

The remainder is always smaller than the divisor. If it is bigger or the same, the divisor still goes in at least once more.

To check a division, multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the dividend back.
