coordinates and translation

Plot points from their coordinates, find the missing vertex of a shape, and translate shapes on a grid.

Guide

The grid has two axes: the x-axis across and the y-axis up. They meet at the origin, (0, 0). Coordinates are written (x, y): the first number says how far across, the second how far up. (4, 2) means 4 across, then 2 up.

The classic mistake is swapping the two numbers. A saying that helps: "along the corridor, then up the stairs" — across first, then up.

In a translation every point of the shape slides the same distance in the same direction. The shape does not turn, flip or change size. Moving 4 right and 2 up adds 4 to every x-coordinate and 2 to every y-coordinate.
