Given, solution, answer
Write a problem the way it is written in an exercise book: Given, Find, Solution (by questions, by actions, as one expression) and Answer.
- Russia: grade 2
Guide
A word problem is set out in parts: Given (what is known, written briefly), Find (the question), Solution and Answer. This form is used in Russian primary classes.
The solution can be written step by step with a question for each step (“1) How many boys? 12 + 5 = 17”), or as one expression such as 5 · 6 − 18 = 12. The unit goes in brackets after the number. The answer is always a full sentence: “Answer: there are 29 pupils in the class.”
The child picks the data, makes an equality, solves a two-step problem and a problem as one expression, and then chooses the right way to write the answer. Extra facts in a problem are normal: not everything mentioned is needed.
