Pie charts and the mean

Colour and read pie charts, level bars to find the mean, and tell numerical data from data in words.

Guide

This studio follows Year 6 pie charts and the mean, with kinds of data from Years 5–6.

A pie chart shows one whole split into parts. The parts start at the top (12 o'clock) and go clockwise. To colour, choose a colour from the list under the circle, then tap the parts.

The mean is what each one would get if everything were shared out equally. You can lower the tall bars and give what you take to the short ones until all are level. The other way: add everything up and divide by how many there are.

Some questions have numbers as answers (like height): numerical data. Others have words (like favourite colour): categorical data. Only numerical data has a mean.

Ask your child: "If everyone had the same, how much would each have?"
