Ukrainian books measure length in centimetres (cm), decimetres (dm) and metres (m). In Grade 1 children meet the decimetre: 1 dm = 10 cm. It is easiest to see on a ruler, where 0 to 10 is ten centimetres.
In Grade 2 named numbers are written in two ways: simple (27 cm) and compound (2 dm 7 cm). To go from one to the other remember 1 dm = 10 cm: 2 dm 7 cm = 20 cm + 7 cm = 27 cm.
Only the same units can be added and subtracted: decimetres with decimetres, centimetres with centimetres. If the units differ, first write everything in centimetres. The strip under the task shows that from a decimetre to a centimetre is 10 times.
