Set square, ruler and protractor
Draw a perpendicular and a parallel with a set square, measure and draw angles with a protractor, and draw the height of a triangle.
- Russia: grade 6
Guide
In the Russian programme (Grades 5-6) constructions are done with a ruler, a set square (угольник) and a protractor. Perpendicular: put one leg of the set square along the given line, slide it until the other leg passes through the point, and draw along it. Parallel: press the ruler against one side of the set square and slide the set square along the ruler.
A protractor measures angles: its centre goes on the vertex and one side along the zero of the scale. Read the scale that starts at the zero. The common slip is reading the other scale and getting 135 instead of 45 degrees.
The height of a triangle is the perpendicular from a vertex to the line of the opposite side. Here the "set square" is a line through two grid points. Compass constructions are a separate studio.
