Extra: thermometers and imperial units
Read a thermometer in °C, then meet inches, feet, pounds and pints and their metric equivalents.
- UK: Year 2
Guide
We measure temperature with a thermometer, in degrees Celsius (°C). Water freezes at 0 °C.
Not every mark on a thermometer has a number. First work out what each small mark is worth, then count on.
Temperatures below zero are negative: −6 °C means 6 degrees below zero. The lower it is, the colder it is.
Imperial units are older units still used in the UK. 1 foot = 12 inches, 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 mile = 1760 yards.
Rough metric equivalents: 1 inch ≈ 2.5 cm, 1 kg ≈ 2.2 pounds (lb), 1 pint ≈ 570 ml, 5 miles ≈ 8 km.
