Position, direction and turns

Find left and right, above, below and between. Then turn an arrow a quarter, a half and three quarters of a turn.

Guide

This studio is for Years 1 and 2. Read the sentences aloud; the small picture at the top also shows what to do.

Practise left and right with hands first: "Put your left hand up." The board is like a sheet of paper, so left is always on the child's left-hand side.

Clockwise is the way the hands of a clock go (↻); anticlockwise is the other way (↺). A quarter turn clockwise from facing forwards leaves you facing right. Two quarter turns make a half turn, and four make a whole turn, which brings you back to where you started.

Let your child turn too: stand facing the door, make a quarter turn clockwise, and say what you are facing now.
