Compound problems

Tell simple from compound problems, then write the solution by actions and as one expression with brackets.

Guide

In Ukrainian Grade 2 problems are simple (one action) or compound (two or more actions). A compound problem is split into simple ones.

The analysis scheme helps: the question goes into the top circle and what we must know to answer it into the lower circles. A short record uses the key words: "There were — ? / Spent — 7 / Left — ?".

A solution is written by actions: 1) 5 + 10 = 15 (UAH) — there were; 2) 15 − 7 = 8 (UAH) — left. Or as one expression: (5 + 10) − 7 = 8. There may be more than one way: 15 − (6 + 5) = (15 − 6) − 5.
