Comparing and ordering big numbers

Compare numbers up to a million place by place, put them in order and add whole thousands.

Guide

In Russian schools (Grade 4, "Numbers and quantities", the books of Moro and Peterson) children study numbers up to a million: the classes of ones and thousands, comparing place by place, ordering, and adding or taking away several units of a place.

To compare two numbers, compare the number of digits first and then the digits place by place from the left. The first place where the digits differ decides which number is bigger.

Zeros inside a number are essential: 305 070 and 3 57 are different numbers. A space between the classes (305 070) makes a number easier to read: "three hundred five thousand seventy".
