Hundreds and thousands: place value and expanded form

Build, read and write numbers to 10 000 with base-ten blocks, write them in expanded form, compare them from the highest place, and meet Roman numerals.

Guide

This studio is for Years 3 and 4. It follows on from "Tens and ones": now there are four columns, ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.

A small cube is 1, a rod is 10, a flat is 100 and a big cube is 1000. Ten flats stacked up make one big thousand cube.

The ← 10 button exchanges ten of one place for one of the place on its left, and 1 → does the opposite. The number stays the same; only the way it is made changes.

expanded form writes a number as the sum of its digits' values: 4705 = 4000 + 700 + 5. If a place is empty, the number shows a 0 there to hold the other digits in place.

To compare two 4-digit numbers, start at the highest place, the thousands. The first place where the digits differ decides which is bigger.

The last mission shows Roman numerals: counters marked I, X and C stand for ones, tens and hundreds.
