Compound problems with multiplication and division
Solve compound problems: the remainder, sums and differences of products, and several times more or fewer.
- Ukraine: grade 2
- Russia: grade 3
Guide
In Ukrainian Grade 2 compound problems use multiplication and division. In a remainder problem you first find what there was with a product (5 · 2 = 10), then subtract (10 − 6 = 4).
For the difference of two products find both products and subtract: 6 · 8 − 4 · 5 = 48 − 20 = 28. The whole solution can be one expression; the brackets show the order.
Key words suggest the action: "3 more" is addition, "3 times as many" is multiplication, "4 fewer" is subtraction, "4 times fewer" is division. When comparing, "how many more?" is subtraction and "how many times more?" is division.
