Problem: short record and solution

Write the condition briefly, make an equality, solve the problem in one or two steps and write the answer.

Guide

In Grades 1–2 (NUSH books) a problem has parts: the condition (what is known), the question (what must be found), the solution (an equality) and the answer. The condition is written briefly: «There were — 9 apples. Eaten — 4 apples. Left — ?».

The solution is an equality with the name in brackets: 9 − 4 = 5 (apples). Answer: 5 apples are left. If you do not know how many there were at the start, on the diagram it is the whole, and it is found by adding.

In Grade 2 the problems get harder: with three addends, with two questions, in two steps. First answer the first question, then the second; later this can be written as one expression.
